First, always wash your hands before touching your piercing or jewelry. Your piercing should be cleaned two-three times a day while healing. Over-cleaning can irritate a piercing. Do not clean more than three times a day unless the piercing has been exposed to dirt, sweat or other contaminants. The less you touch your new piercing, the better.

To clean your piercing, a simple sea salt solution is recommended. Mix eight ounces of warm water with ¼ teaspoon of sea salt (not table salt). A stronger solution is not better. An easier alternative is to use H2Ocean. It is a sterile, ready-made, sea salt solution spray developed specifically for body piercings. Moisten a cotton swab, cotton ball or gauze pad with the solution and clean around the piercing. Gently clean away any dried build-up or discharge. These are bodily secretions that are produced naturally during healing. You do not need to rinse the solution, simply let it air dry. I do not recommend using any soaps, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointments or other chemicals on piercings. This can lead to irritation, scarring, rejection or slower healing. You do not need to rotate the jewelry during healing.

Special instructions for oral piercings:

The area of any oral piercing will swell. To help with this, you can use ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatory medicine. Sucking on ice chips and popsicles can also help with discomfort. Be gentle while eating for the first few days to avoid biting your jewelry or catching it on your teeth. Avoid excessive alcohol, smoking, chewing tobacco and spicy foods. You should rinse your mouth with non-alcoholic mouthwash after consuming anything other than water for the first few weeks. Clean the outside of the mouth with the sea salt solution two-three times daily. Deep kissing/oral sex are not recommended for at least 4 weeks after a new piercing.

Happy Healing!
